"DOT-CO" Domain extension

Yes, up to now the Internet domain space has been dominated 95% by .com's that is certainly going to shrink as alternatives expand in the coming years.

Alternatives are here today for those looking for a domain that more clearly defines their website or business. There are many examples of where, because the dot-com's are so crowed, it becomes difficult to register the domain name that you desire. That is until NOW.

The door just opened by introducing the dot-co's. I picked up one of these domains for eMail purposes because it is a short domain name that is for my friends and family to remember. (www.4tx.co) Now that is easy to remember. I am all for Texas so just think 4tx.co. Now for those of you in say NYC you may want 4NY.co.

The point I am making is you have the opportunity, if you want, to register a domain name that has not been available because the dot-com's are so crowded. The demand is high and before you think you would like to highjack a name like "Ford" it is will not going to happen due to the ICANN Group (ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination we wouldn't have one global Internet.). Their decision to protect brand names like Ford and others is something we can all appreciate and respect.
